Yellowcard - Paper Walls
Capitol Records . release date: 07-20-07 . written by Oliver
The Ventura based punk quintet Yellowcard has become a synonym for “new” rock music, trough being the ones, that have combined stunning melodies with rock, skatepunk and classical elements. Their career began, when they moved from Florida to California to release their debut “One For The Kids” on Lobster records and later their EP “The Underdog” on Fueled By Ramen records. Sean Michael Wellman-Mackin, who is in the band since its early beginnings, plays violin since his he was six years old. His contribution on violin really has created a new kind of listening pleasure. Their 2003 debut for Capitol records “Ocean Avenue” sold about 2,5 million copies, shortly fallowed by 2006´s gold certified “Lights and sounds”. Both releases got pretty much dominated by Sean´s violin set. Former member Benjamin Harper (guitar) left the band in 2006 and did not participated any more on the recording process. He got replaced trough Ryan Mendez, who played in Lobster Records artist Staring Back before. I did not really liked Lights And Sounds, because it turned out pretty dark and it sounded even very boring to me. I was totally missing the great melodies, that I used to be in since Ocean Avenue has come out. In 2007 YC released “Paper Walls”, an album with super catchy songs on, that has a lot in common with 2003´s smash Ocean Avenue. Finally the great melodies are back and well, I have the same good feeling again, when I listen to the new record, that I also felt in 2003. I read a lot of bad critique on the internet. Many writers did not gave the record a good mark, but I will do. The new record is pretty catchy, with stunning melodies on, paired with great choruses and great awesome violin parts on.
