Useless I.D. - The lost broken bones
Rude/Oleh Records . 11/28/2008 . written by Oliver . genre: Skatepunk/ Melody-core . format: CD
Useless ID from Haifa, Israel belongs to the most successful
punk Israeli punk bands ever. They started their career when The Ataris lead-singer
Kris Roe found out about them in 1999 and decided to release a split-EP with them.
1999's Fatwreck compilation "Short music for short people" also contained
a track from Useless ID. Afterwards the band got signed to Kung Fu records. Kris
Roe produced their debut album "Bad Story, Happy Ending" in 2001. Over
the years the band has recorded another two albums for Kung Fu records. After
the massive presence of Myspace and illegal downloads Joe Escalante (owner of
Kung Fu records and member in The Vandals) decided to close his label. In 2008
the band returned to the studio and recorded with Bill Stevenson (Rise
Against/ All/ Nofx). The recorded got released trough Suburban Home records in
the US, Rude Records for Europe and Oleh! Records for Israel. Whenever I listen
to Useless ID I feel reminded to No Use For A Name. No joke - lead singer Yotam
Ben-Horin's voice shows a lot of parallels to Tony Sly. This fact is getting obvious
when you listen to several songs, like "One Way Down" or "Night
Stalker". I am a huge fan of No Use For A Name, so it is abvious that I love
this band here too. Their newest effort "The lost broken bones" really
sounds like a fantastic californian Skatepunk release with amazing refrains and
great back-up-vocals and sing-a-longs. Bill Stevenson made this twelve songs sound
so well and bright. The very best songs on this record to find are: "Killing
A Ghost", which has a fantastic refrain. "Blood Pressure" has also
a fantastic refrain that invites the listener to sing-a-long with directly. I
like the big basslines on this song. "Shallow End" is the kick-ass song
on this record. It starts slow and awaits you only with a guitar. Then the refrain
starts! I am totally overwhelmed whenever I listen to the great refrain and the
soft back-up vocals. So great, really! "Misconception" sounds as if
the band has copied a song from No Use For A Name's "Daily Grind" EP.
Wow! "The Lost Broken Bones" is the bands 4th american release. They
released two on their own, before they were signed to Kung Fu records in 2000.
To me "The Lost Broken Bones" definitely belongs to their very best
material. The album awaits you with such great melodies and stunning refrains. Alright, there are not so many fast songs to find like in their early beginnings, but I also love these great mid-tempo songs.
