Underoath - Lost in the sound of seperation
Toothandnail Records . release date: 09/02/2008 . written by Oliver . genre: Screamo/ Metal/ Emo/ Rock
By releasing a way more heavier effort in comparison to their foregoer releases
“They´re only chasing Safity” and “Define The Great Line”,
Florida´s finest export in hardcore music - Underoath -
has returned yet with their third studio album on Solid State records, called
“Lost in the sound of seperation”. Solid´s best selling artist
has gained grammys, gold- and platinum awards for having released their heavy
blast of metal and screamo. To me the band has really gained respect through releasing
their masterpiece work to date “They´re only chasing safity”
in 2004, which was one of the most brilliant releases from the Screamo genre.
By having united great chorusses and the very best refrains ever on their CD,
Underoath became one of the most well known artists from the Screamo genre. Recently
they released “Lost in the sound of seperation”, which has turned
out to be a very strong and powerful release with eleven exploding tracks on.
Fans can buy the record in four different versions: standard version, special
edition version with DVD, limited edition and super-deluxe version, which is only
available in coloured vinyl. The bands´ newest effort got described by Alternativepress
as truly “2008's first perfect record”; Billboard Magazine wrote:
“Underoath has made definitive strides at progression without abandoning
the muscular, broad-shouldered hardcore that made it a household name”.
I can find a lot of positive critique on Underoath´s newest release but
to me, the band cannot challenge their 2004 masterpiece “They´re only
chasing safety”. What is so different about those records, you may ask?
In 2004 drummer Aaron Gillespie, who is blind in his left eye and color-blind
in his right eye, was involved in a lot of lead singing. Both singers Spencer
Chamberlain and Aaron shared vocals and made the album sound so stormy and fantastic
at once. On “Lost in the sound of seperation” the band has produced
with Adam Jonathan Dutkiewicz, who worked with a lot of metalbands, as there are
As I Lay Dying, Unerath, From Autumn To Ashes, Parkway Drive – to name a
few here. “Lost In The Sound Of Seperation” starts off good, with
a killer tune called “Breathing in a new mentality”. The track is
pretty hard and melodic, but it grabs the listener directly from the seat. The
minus about the new record is, that Aaron´s vocals got reduced a lot, while
Spencer Chamberlain is taking over the majority of the songs. The result sometimes
sounds pretty boring, because the greatest Screamo band has become a standard
metal band now. The great chorusses, the breathtaking refrains, the convulsing
synthesizer parts and at least the creativity and ideas have really got tuned
down. What we hear now is some really dark and bleak metal music. The record has
it´s best moments, when Aaron is singing as well. He also sing a whole ballard,
called “Too bright to see, too loud to hear”, which is an outstandig
track with clapping hands in the back, killer-lyrics and super-great drum parts.
To me the ballard has turned out to be the very best track on the new record,
because the strange and haunting atmosphere on this track reminds me a lot to
Deftones´ classic “White Pony” release. The most outstanding
hardcore tracks are “Breathing in a new mentality” and “Emergency
Broadcast – the end is near”. Those songs are full of anger, energy
and raw power. In general the record turned out pretty hard and powerful –
even too powerful in my opinion. The band is still better than many other similar
artists, but I liked Underoath´s 2004 release “They´re only
chasing Safity” a lot more.
