The Gaslight Anthem - The 59 sound
Sideone Dummy Records . 08/19/2008 . written by Oliver
The hype on The Gaslight Anthem makes me pretty confused. Whenever I check the
internet for some information on TGA I find only the very best critics and kudos
to the band. I read about comparisons, stated by writers who felt reminded to
The Hold Steady (Vagrant records), Moneybrother (Burning Heart), Joe Strummer
(Anti) and Bruce Springsteen. Frontman Brian Fallon recently even got hired for
an apperance on Springsteen’s pivotal album, “Born To Run”.
“The 59´ Sound” is the bands somophore release on Sideonedummy
records – a label that is known for signing very different kind of bands;
and well it seems as if The Gaslight Anthem may become the very next big thing.
The arrangement of Blues, emotion and heart-felt pain is overshined by Fallon´s
raw voice, who makes an explosive mixture out of this album, hitting Punks and
Rock fans directly into the heart trough his soulful voice. I am sure my older
Brother did not listened to Lagwagon, but he may listen to The Gaslight Anthem
when I show it to him. The record can be destined to be a Rock release for fans
of every age. By having Sideonedummy as their label in the back; and after having
released a great debut record (Sink or Swim), the band may conquer the music scene
shortly in about a few months. Ted Hutt (ex-Flogging Molly) did a great job on
this record, when he made Fallon´s voice shine over the whole recording.
The recording quality has turned out solid and the songs have enough craft to
carry fans and critiques along.
