That Was Something - Bears
Oort/Lobster Records . release date: 02-12-08 . written by Oliver
The great people of Lobster records have found a new project, called
Oort records. Their intention is to give real unknown musicians a great
chance in the music industry. You can already find a few good bands on their
label, alike Rosematter, Anchor For Arms or Faster-Faster. The newest signing
for Oort records is called That Was Something - a very good
band, whose singer reminds me really a lot to Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy.
Let me start with the cover artwork at first, which has really turned out cute.
The artwork shows a group of bears searching for honey. If you open up the cover
you see some bears, that look like construction workers. Those bears are searching
their way under the earth, looking out for a huge pot of honey. I am really
into the cover art work - really nice. Let me tell you know something about
their beginnings and how they found their way to Oort: The young band from Detroit,
MI begun when Ryan (bass), John (drums) and Jon-Paul
(vocals/guitar) started out jamming in High-School. They all played in several
projects, when they met Marc (keys) and Robert (vocals) at
local shows. Today the band became a six piece and a guy named Bradley
Walden sings now. Robert Weber was on vocals, when Bears got recorded.
His voice is really young but also pretty good. He is able to sing in a very
powerful manner on one hand, but he shows also very sensitive site, which sounds
so very good too. I honestly need to admit, that the lyrics contain nothing
special. Their music deals with normal themes, that young teenagers like to
discuss about: Love. And so I found a few quotes, like "It tastes
like sugar, it tates to sweet when we we´re walking under beauty, under
the leaves, when we kissed..." Ok, these are nice and cosey words that
suit very well on a Powerpop quintett. Bears is a solid album with nice melodies
on, that got surrounded by synthesizer and soft electric guitar. At least I
need to admit, that I miss stronger chords on Bears. The album has turned out
to soft somehow. On one hand they sound like Fall Out Boy but on the other hand
the sharpeness is missing. Robert Weber recently got replaced trough Bradley
Waldon on vocals. Probably the group may reach more power through the line-up
change.
