Portugal. The Man - Censored Colours

Portugal The ManOn September 16 Alaskan indie Rock group Portugal. The Man has released its third full length CD. After starting their career on Fearless records in 2006, the band recently got signed to Equal Vision – a label that may has a very good credibility on the band. Portugal. The Man has not only a freaked out bandname, even the members are wearing very strange clothes and well their music is not really good to describe for us writers, because Portugal combines every style with every instrument, that they can play. The result in the past was often a mixture between emo, indie, ambient, jazz and experimental. Probably a comparison to The Mars Volta and J.R. Ewing can describe pretty good, what Portugal. The Man sounds like. John Baldwin Gourley is doing lead vocals and plays guitar. His voice is really extraordinary and really exciting. On Censored Colours the band proofes again its creativity. I wonder, how can one band mix up so many styles and instruments while they are not loosing the path. It doesn´t matter how weird and catastrophal the tracks sound in one moment, they get back to the roots in the next second. Equal Vision calls their band one of the most unique groups on their label. Their abstruct and creative music is really a challenge and joy to listen to. On Equal Vision records I found this quote: “Portugal. The Man's newest album features fifteen fiercely transcendent vignettes. The band calls the collection Censored Colors - side one is a half-dozen single tracks, while side two consists of a long suite of compositions, segued together into one seamless presentation” (source: EV - artist/Portugal._The_Man). Describing the new record is pretty hard. Whenever I listen a flood of instruments and different music styles is smashing down on me. If you combine Led Zeppelin, The Beatles with jazz stuff, mellow guitars with melancolic vocals, piano, trumpet, flute, syntheziser, organ, percusisson then you have the most weird and probably the most exciting record of the 2008 in your hands. Enjoy listening the haunting and weird atmosphere around the record.
