Phantom Planet - Raise the dead

Fueled By Ramen Records . release date: 04-15-08 . written by Oliver

BaysideEveryone knows Phantom Planet´s worldwide smash hit “California”, which was to find on 2002´s The Guest. Raise The Dead is the bands latest effort and fourth full lenght CD, that got released on April 15th trough Fueled By Ramen records. Bandleader Alex Greenwald has a really strange but impressive – and matured – voice. The chaotic band created a great masterpiece consisting of 70´s Rock music, with huge guitars, funny lyrics, super-fresh melodies, trumpet and freaked-out solos. I totally like the mixture between hard Rock tracks and some more silent tunes. The record totally got influenced by Rock and Pop tunes from the 70´s, like Supertramp and Iggy Pop. I can also figure out small affects on The Killers and other great bands. I am so stocked from the new album, which has so much to offer: On “Too Much To Often” you find a freaked out drum-solo plus piano and accordion. Somehow I feel reminded to Panic At The Disco, who´s album really got affected a lot by the Beatles. I can find some small affects on the Beatles too, but Phantom Planet made it right: Their freaked-out mixture is so weird but so wonderful – and danceable at least. The most strangest – but also coolest song is called “Dropped” (#2). This tune sounds like coming directly from the 70´s and it is coming along with a super-huge refrain, a killah guitar-solo and a mega-driving drums. The next song is called "Leader". The song contains a children-choir and freaked-out guitar parts plus shouting vocals from the back. God, this might be the coolest release in the summer in 2008.
