Nofx - Coaster

Nofx newest effort "Coaster" was produced by punkrock produced Bill Stevenson, who worked with tons of great bands from the punkrock genre, for example Rise Against. Coaster was released April 28 and it only cost 8 dollar. Fat Mike stated: "This is not a sale. This is how much this CD costs.... We make less profit, but bands hopefully will sell more CDs to more people, which is why we started doing this in the first place." I think Fat Wreck is affected by illegal downloads just like every other label. To me 8 dollars is more than fair offer to the kids. You get a great cover artwork a booklet and CD and not a fucking unpersonal download. Anyway, Coaster contains 12 typical NOFX songs. Some got filled-out with horns, others with synthesizers, some are fast, some are slow, some are killer fast; just like the way we knew it from tons of NOFX foregoer records. NOFX is known for funny lyrics. "Creeping Out Sara" proofes that. Fat Mike makes fun on twins and musicians Tegan and Sara. But I found a very serious track too, called "My Orphan Year". I am not sure, if Fat Mike refers on his own experiences he made, but this track is a sad one. I will quote some lines here: "My father had dementia . he lied in bed for months . once in a while he'd call me . and ask me to fly down . I told him that I'd love to . but I had things to do . My mother battled cancer . for over seven years" (etc.). This song is deeply touching and I wonder if Mike really shows his very own experiences here. "Coaster" is a nice record, but I think NOFX already wrote their best songs in the 90's. The songs are good, they are good as musicians but I honestly have to admit that NOFX was much better once. I definately have to honor the real great artwork, which looks so seventies. Real great work on the coverartwork by Ryan Harlin.
