Millencolin - Machine 15
Burning Heart records . release date: 04/07/2008 [EUR] . written by Oliver
To me Millencolin is still one of the most important bands from
Europe. These guys are about 15 in the music business to find now. Their new album
title is based on that fact. I clearly renember when Millencolin started out as
a kinky Punkrock-Skate-Ska band. Their unforgetable releases Tiny Tunes
or Use Your Nose EP got described by critiques as “Snowboarders
wet dream come true”. Millencolin started as a fourpiece band around 15
years ago and they kept the constellation since then by. The band members have
become great friends and Millencolin has become a kind of family for them. In
2000 Millencolin released Pennybridge Pioneers on Epitaph/Burning Heart.
Brett Gurewitz founder member of Bad Religion and owner of Epitaph records made
the producer job for them. Pennybridge became the bands biggest sucsess up to
date. The record grabbed gold in Australia, because it got sold about 35000 times
there. Afterwards Millencolin released “Home from Home” and “Kingwood”.
Both albums did not really worked out good in my opinion. I missed the catchyness,
that Millencolin was always well known for. The bands newest work - Machine 15
– came out on May 6th and I can finally state that Millencolin has released
an enduring powerful release again with plenty of gigantic melodies on. The opener
track is also called “Machine15” – a song about the bands history.
I totally like the refrain: “Drop the gun, that is stuck to my head …
the machine is turning 15”. Nicola´s mature voice keeps singing that
great refrain, that infects you directly from the first second on. On “Machine15”
the band has realisezed all their creativeness on just one release. And so you
find slamming Rock tracks, turbulent drums, astonishing melodies and killer refrains
and also a lot of triffles, alike Violin in the back on “Done is Done”
or “Saved By Hell”. The most outstandig track in my opinion is called
“Vicious Circle” – a killer tune, that starts pretty soft with
pleasant guitar and soft vocals. But then the drums set in and suddenly the tune
becomes more powerful. The chorus on that song is just mindblowing. To me the
tune sounds like an outtake from the Pennybridge album. The next outstanding song
is called “Saved by hell” – a tune with a real orchestra in
the back. To me Millencolin is still one of the most influencial band from the
alternative genre up to date. Nicola is an amazing singer with a stunning voice.
Matthias, who has also found a sideproject, called “Franky Lee” is
a great guitarplayer and songwriter. Larzon, who plays drums for a swedish hardcore
band and Eric, who runs a skatehall and who is also a designer is also a very
great guitar player. The band is a perfect match, that has great ideas and who
write really fresh and vital tunes. Machine 15 turned out to be a firework of unbelieveable melodies and great spirit.
