Mayday Parade - A lesson in romantics
Fearless/East-West Records . release date: 2007/07/10 . written by Oliver
After having a sucsessful EP out on Fearless records(tales told by dead friends/ 2007), the band got encouraged to record a full lenght CD. And here it is: “A lesson in romantics” contains twelve beautiful Pop Punk tunes, pretty much in the vein of Amber Pacific, Lit, Relient-K, The Starrs and Simple Plan. I like the fact, that two singers are doing the vocals in Mayday Parade. One has a pretty mature voice, the other one sounds a little bit younger – but the combination sounds pretty good. Alternative Press honered the band pretty much in the past few months. So let´s look closer, what the band is about: Mayday is a 6-piece melodic rock band hailing from Tallahassee (Florida). Their music sounds pretty bright, their refrains are just amazing. Those songs contain a lot of energy and passion. There are a couple of songs, that totally catch my attention: “If you wanted” contains a strong refrain, that shows even some small similarities to the Backstreet Boys (!). The most outstanding song is called “Jersey”. It would be so akward, if someone can see me now: An 31 year old guy is sitting at home in sweatpants, unwashed, tired, holding the cover in his hands and singing loud to the refrain. Anyway – the record is really good. The recording quality has turned out so very good as well. The drums sound really powerful, the basslines are pretty strong and the hard edged guitars fit well to the singers voices. The band even re-recorded their killer tune “When I get home, you´re so dead”. It still sounds good, but I need to admit, that the tune was so much better in it´s original version, because it showed strong parallels to Panic At The Disco then. Anyway, the band does not need that compison. They are pretty self contained, but I am sure, that Mayday Parade can do better. The songs are nice and pleasant. Some of them really catch your attention fast. But I think, they can even create some more better songs. Until now they sound like a good band from the indie genre, that is able to competite bands like Lit or Simple Plan. They are not a winner band yet. But I´ll guess they have enough potential, to conquer the world soon!
