Mae - (m)orning
Toothandnail records . 09/22/09 . written by Oliver
Mae is a great Rock act that has signed with Toothandnail/ EMI in 2003. The band immediately gained a sponsorship with MacBeth Footwear then. Mae plays emotional Rock music; pretty much in the vein of The Get Up Kid’s album “Something to write home about”. The new album “(m)orning” is a real beautiful and silent release. While there was to find a lot of piano parts on the first album, the band went on to insert more synthesizer parts. I am happy that these times are over. (M)orning is more puristic – more pure Rock and finally singer Dave Elkins plays piano again. I dislike the use of synthesizers if they are to overwhelming. I had the feeling that the past releases got too much dominated by synthesizers. (M)orning is a wonderful album, performed by three well musicians. I definitely have to mention Dave here separately, because he has really a brilliant and calming voice. I like the difference between Dave’s beautiful voice and the dominant instruments. Mae writes romantic lyrics and music. It is a real joy to listen to the great new release “(m)orning”.
