Illuminate is the band's second album that originally was released trough Low Altitude Records on March 18, 2008. Universal Music Group re-released the album on October 21, 2008 again. Lydia is around since 2003. I never heard about the band before and therefore I am so glad that Universal decided to re-release the record again. "Illuminate" contains 11 beautiful - and pretty depressive - Emo Rock tracks, that remind me a lot to Pompeii and to Scott Windsor from The Lyindsay Diaries (today The Umbrellas). Lydia give me a blast whenever I listen to their album. I recently read a critique on Absolutepunk calling them "Band Of The Year". I am not sure if I can agree on this, but I can assure you that the band is pretty good and their second effort is just breathtaking. The artwork on "Illuminate" got created by 20 year old designer Becky Filip and the bands Myspace account got designed by "We Are Synapse" - who is such great and professional designer team. I would like to focuss now on Lydia's music: The band is fronted by two singers: A male and a female singer. Leighton Antelman has a almost boyish and bittersweet voice, that fits so perfectly to the dark - and sometimes - haunting music. Mindy White is doing co-vocals. Her voice is so wonderful, so sweet but also pretty expressive too. Lydia recorded together with Matt Malpass who helped the band to deliver a flawless and sentimental Emo-Indie affected album with wonderful melodies on. This release is sure not destined for happy days. The cover already point that out, because it shows a girl with an umbrella in her hands while the wind is blowing stronly. The girl holds it firmly as if she is holding the one card that can trump all hands in a free poker match. If you like depressive music like The Lyndsay Diaries or Pompeii then you shouldn´t hesitate to buy this great album.
