John Ralston - Sorry vampire

Vagrant Records . release date: 10-02-07 . written by Oliver

John RalstonTo me John Ralston is currently the very best artist on Vagrant records. John is a solo artist, who plays a huge quantity of instruments on his own. So you find him playing banjo, electric guitar, wurlitzer, tongue drum, stylophone, mandolin and more (!) on his own. He really seems to be a multi-talent. I really did not expected such a good record, when I received a pack of Vagrant CD´s recently. John´s release has many positive aspects, that I like. At first I recognized a pretty funny cover artwork with blue mouses and a kind of trumpet-bird. Whenever I listen to John Ralston I felt reminded to Scott Garth, who was a solo-artist on My Records - a label, that once was own by Joey Cape from Lagwagon. You probably also know The Annivasary - a kind of electronic Rock band, that released a super-hit album on Vagrant records in 2000, called "Designing a nervous breakdown". If you put those two brilliant bands together, you get a clue what John R. sounds like. Hm... probably you should also add Elliott Smith but then we have a strike. I need to add, that John has a raw and silent voice. It fit so perfect into the wonderful, dreamily music, that he is playing.
