Punk76: How was your day so far?
Maika: Good! We had quite an eventful lead up to being here, our bus caught on fire, so we woke up to a smoke filled bus and it was kind of scary I don't know what kind of fumes I breathed in while I was sleeping but I think we made it through..
Punk76: So you're feeling alright now?
Maika: Yeah, the food was amazing here, they treat us very well so yeah, it's good.
Punk76: Is it your first time being in Germany?
Maika: Yes, well we played two shows in Germany
Punk76: On this tour?
Maika: Yes on this tour, so yeah, it's our first time in Germany.
Punk76: Finally!
Maika: Yes, I know, I know, it's been like a long time coming but we wouldn't have it any other way.
Punk76: Is it true that your bandname was „The Kick Off“ first and then you changed it to „There For Tomorrow“?
Maika: Yeah (laughing), when I was like fat and 13. But there was a UK band called „The Kick Off“ at that time and we just wanted to depart from that. And Jay had a list of names and we were so young, we kind of knew what we were getting into but we didn't know that we would still be satisfied with the name today. We just wanted something simple and There For Tomorrow just means that we want to be around.
Punk76: The band was formed in 2004..
Maika: 2003 I think.
Punk76: Oh okay, you definitely know it better than me. Then you started with small shows and got a slot on the Vans Warped Tour in 2006 and 2007, would you say that those two tours helped you getting your career further?
Maika: That year was really cool because we kind of just played Orlando and that was it and we were able to go in there and really premiere our name into the whole festival. And do our whole guerilla marketing thing, while we were young we were passing out flyers and we gave people free water bottles if they came to the stage and stuff like that. Yeah and we ended up playing in front of close to a thousand people that day which was really cool. But as we continued with our career and played on Warped Tour it's obviously gotten better and we're doing it this year again. We're pretty looking forward to it and we're playing on a different stage. It's kind of like it's own world and some of the stuff on Warped Tour is pretty crazy but we love it.
Punk76: I talked to so many bands about Warped Tour and most of them say that they really like it but that it's also extremely exhausting, what's your opinion to that?
Maika: It is, like imagine being outside continuely for 48 days with some of the hottest temperatures in the world. It's pretty testing on your physical will.
Punk76: You're playing all dates this year right?
Maika: Yeah.
Punk76: That's insane.
Maika: Yeah, we did it in 2011, I mean 2009, I'm sorry. I'm mixed up, all these bus fumes..
Punk76: After that you met James Paul Wisner, who also worked with Underoath and Paramore and he produced your first EP „Pages“ in 2007, how did that come? Where did you know him from or did he approach you?
Maika: It was pretty organic how it came. We played a show at the social which is a local venue in Orlando and his drum tech at the time, who worked for him, was there and we were coincidentially looking for people to work with and it just came about and he was like „please work with James, you guys are the perfect sound, perfect sound for what he's capable of enhancing“ so we did that and it turned out better than we ever thought.
Punk76: In 2008 you signed to Hopeless Records, do you remember the day when you had to put your signature under the contact? What kind of feeling was it like? More like „yeah, we made it“ or also a little thought like „oh my god, what's coming next“?
Maika: I do remember the day. It was, we were so young that we kind of didn't know what was going on and all the legal jargon with the contract is kind of crazy but looking back at how the relationship was formed with them it was very organic and very genuine how they approached us and kept being interested over time so they were the most passionate about us and that's why we chose them. And the feeling was like „it starts now“, you can not just let yourself go but you have to work harder.
Punk76: I read that your next record will hopefully come out this summer?
Maika: It will!
Punk76: So have you been to the studio already?
Maika: Yeah, we did it in a month.
Punk76: In a month?
Maika: Yeah, we wrote 13 songs in seven days and then recorded it over the next three weeks. We just went with our instincts and it's going to be out this summer.
Punk76: Do you have a title for it yet?
Maika: Yeah, we have everything. We're just not telling anybody yet (smiling.)
Punk76: Oh come on.. some info?
Maika: therefortomorrow.com it's coming.. our new single is out though, it's called „Hunthunthunt“, it's on youtube and on itunes as well.
Punk76: Okay, let's go back to Warped Tour for a second, the line up this year is fantastic, is there a band that you're really looking forward to?
Maika: Uhm.. not really.
Punk76: Really? I have the list of the line up here (showing him)
Maika: Let me see..
Punk76: Those are the bands that are coming and there's not a single one you're looking forward to?
Maika: Yellowwolf, definitely Yellowwolf. He's a rapper.
Punk76: I could tell you like 20 bands I'd love to see.
Maika: I'm just really particular.. Relient K, we can't wait to see them. We haven't seen them for a long time. Other than that..
Punk76: Okay, then tell me what is your favourite band in general?
Maika: I don't really have a favourite band, our taste grows and so.. we like everything so it's hard to finish it down to one thing.
Punk76: What is the last song you listened to?
Maika: I think it was a song of our new album.
Punk76: Besides your own band? (smiling)
Maika: Probably Royksopp, they're a Norwegian electro-pop-duo.
Punk76: Okay, do fans sometimes annoy you? Like when you're eating or on the phone and they come up and ask for an autograph or a picture with you?
Maika: At times yes but we all try to remember the place we were in a few years ago when we wanted to talk to our favourite people and our excitement was so overwhelming that we didn't understand the privacy. So it's okay.
Punk76: And the last question: if you would have to be in a TV show and you would have to choose between being either on Gossip Girl, on the Simpsons, or on a crime show like CSI NY or stuff like that, what would you choose?
Maika: I'd say Gossip Girl. I just want to be the bad boy maybe.. try that role I guess. And the girls don't hurt either. (smiling).
Punk76: Alright, that's it, thank you!
Maika: Cool, thanks Laura! See you around.
