Interview . Papa Roach . w/ Jacoby Shaddix (vocals).

Interviewer: Laura . 18/07/2010 . Deichbrand Festival Cuxhaven .

Punk76: How was your day so far? I saw you running around?

Jacoby: Today we just got in, today is our first festival for the European tour and it's really good to be here in Cuxhaven, it's going to be off the fucking chain! We're very excited. On every first day we kind of move in, we have a wardrobe case and we unpack everything and move it to our bus, it's a really good bus, it's killer. Just starting our Rock 'n Roll summercamp off right here (smiles).

Punk76: Do you like festival shows more compared to club gigs?

Jacoby: I like them both. I like playing festivals, it's cool to check out some different bands and new music. Bands that you like, bands that you know. Sometimes you run into people you know. And I also like headlining or solo shows, I think we're headlining tonight?

Punk76: Yes, you are.

Jacoby: Oh great, we're headlining this festival! So we're headlining and at a festival, good shit.

Punk76: Did you get the chance to watch some bands today?

Jacoby: No, not yet but I think we'll check these guys out, even though I don't even know who that is.

Punk76: It's a German band called „Revolverheld“. Are you leaving right after your show?

Jacoby: Yes, I think we're going to another festival but I don't know where the hell we're going (smiles). You could ask me and I would be like „aaaah...somewhere“. But I'm sure we still will have a party tonight.

Punk76: What would you say are the pro's and con's of playing a festival?

Jacoby: The pro's: Lot's of fans, the food is usually pretty damn good, the con's: sometimes there are no showers which really sucks 'cause you know (smells under his armpits). It's really hot and your balls get all sweaty and shit. I got my lady on the road with me so I like to take a shower after a show.

Punk76: Is there a certain song of your's that the fans at festivals want to hear the most?

Jacoby: Getting Away With Muder always is great, Scars, Last Resort, To Be Loved is definitely a fan-favourite. And we're playing a brand new song tonight called „Kick In The Teeth“, so we'll see how that goes, the fans will be the judge.

Punk76: Looking back at the time before you were famous, did you go to festivals yourself?

Jacoby: Yes, I went to Lollapalooza in America and that was awesome. That was one of the experiences that stick to you. I was like 16 or 17 and I remember driving down to the parking lot early, smoking and drinking and dancing, going crazy all day. And then leaving all sunburned and beat-up with so many new stories. And now it feels good to be on the other side and give people that experience. There are so many young people coming to a festival for the first time and doing so many things for the first time at a rock 'n roll festival and I like to be a part of it.

Punk76: Could you point out a band that really impressed you with their performance at a festival?

Jacoby: I would say Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, those were the bands that always killed the festival shows that I went to. And also Nine Inch Nails when I saw them I was like „oh my god“. And now we're trying to follow their footsteps and give people a good time. That's what it's about.

Punk76: If you're time at Deichbrand Festival would be filmed and made into a movie and you would have to choose the soundtrack for it: one song for travelling to the festival, one for the actual time spent at the festival and one for the travel back, which songs would you choose?

Jacoby: (thinks about it for a bit) I would say.. on the way „Are You ready To Rock“ by Cheap Trick, and then while we're at the festival „I Don't Care As Long As You Sing“ by the Beatsteaks.

Punk76: Oh wow, a German band!

Jacoby: Yeah, they're one of my favourite bands! I've been following that band for like ten years now. So yeah, I really like that band. And then as we leave.. what's that song (starts to sing) „Nananana, nanana heeeey goodbye“, whatever that song is called. [Bananarama – Na na hey hey kiss him goodbye]

Punk76: Could you please complete the sentence: If I could be anywhere in the world right now I'd like to be in..

Jacoby: If I could be anywhere in the world.. hm.. I'd like to be here. Where I am. I'm at a point in my life where I'm just trying to live in the moment. I think if you're never conten with where you're at then what is the fuck with your life anyways. So I want to be right here, this is where I'm meant to be, where I'm supposed to be. This is my dream, right now I'm living it.

Punk76: You're going to release a new record (Time for Annihilation ) this year, what can we expect from it?

Jacoby: Time For Annihilation is a mix of brand new songs and a live album so it's like the best of both worlds. And it's time for us to record a live record, it's ten years into our carreer as a „professional rock band“ or whatever and so many fans came up and said „When are you going to release a live album, we want a live album so bad“ and now that we're done with the major label, we can release music differently. And so we went and recorded a bunch of shows, the best performances of the songs and then we went into the studio and instead of releasing just some b-sides, like „here's a couple of our old songs“ I mean, fuck that. That's not that exciting to me, songs that weren't released. They weren't really that good in the first place so why would you release them now? But yeah, we went and recorded five brand new songs, we wanted to do two but came out with the five kick ass songs. And for the sound of the new songs I'd say it's almost like we took it back to where we were with „Getting Away With Murder“. I think it's fresh, it's different, it's exciting and new. And it sounds like classic Papa Roach, so we're very happy with it.
