Interview . Dúné . w/ Cecilie Dyrberg (Synth. + Vocals + Guitars), Mattias Kolstrup (vocals)
interviewer: Laura Schriefer . 23/01/2010 . Tower . Bremen . Germany .
Punk76: Would you consider yourself more as optimistic persons or pessimistic? Mattias: Optimistic, definitely! Always positive.
Cecilie: You need to think positive when you have this kind of job (smiles) because it goes up and down..
Punk76: But right now it only goes up for you, right?
(both laughing)
Cecilie: That's what people think. But it's tough work as well.
Mattias: Yeah, it is. It's a lot of work.
Punk76: You moved to Berlin, are all of you sharing a flat/house there or are you living separately?
Mattias: We live separately. Normally we share a bus and the few times we don't share a bus it's nice to separated.
Cecilie: But we all live rather close to each other and we see each other a lot.
Punk76: You supported lots of great bands from Fall Out Boy and the Foo Fighters to "die Ärzte", did it help your career?
Mattias: I think it definitely helped the career. When we supported Fall Out Boy it was the first time we've played in front of a bigger audience in Germany and we've got so many fans from there. They stuck to us and we really have to thank those people. Foo Fighters as well, helped us in the way, it's good promotion to say "we supported Foo Fighters" because then people now "they supported the Foo Fighters, they supported Muse" and they think it's cool.
Punk76: Which band was the most fun to be on tour with?
Mattias: Foo Fighters.
Cecilie: Yes, Foo Fighters.
Mattias: Or Panic At The Disco!
Cecilie (laughing): Yeah, Panic At The Disco.. they were funny as well. They were just too stoned all the time.
Mattias: They are just so american. Do you know the band Portugal The Man? We've toured with them as well, not as a support but more like a double. They were really really funny, because they're so chilled..
Cecilie: It's really different from us, when we tour we're always really loud. It's so funny, I watched our support band "Fertig, los" yesterday while eating and they were so quiet. And we, you know we are 7 people in the band and it's just really loud all the time.
Punk76: You're all always very good looking and well dressed, do you have a stylist?
(both smiling and saying "thank you" in German)
Cecilie: Actually, we do. But mostly for video shoots and photo sessions. We have a stylist from Copenhagen, Denmark. And it's really, really cool. Especially me, I have lot of cooperation with her, E-Mailing all the time.. that's really cool.
Punk76: What would you say is the most apparant difference between "We are in there, you are out here" an "Enter Metropolis"?
Mattias: The guitars! I think everything just got twisted up. The guitars became thicker and the synth sounds became more.. uhm.. you know, we used old analog synthezisers the last time but this time it's more like a broad-synth-electronic-sound-image kind of. Because of the wide arrangements of synthezisers. I think this time it was just more of everything and we play our instruments better. We were really influenced by the live-sound, by all the gig's we've played.
Cecilie (smiling): We were influenced by our own live-sound.
Punk76: What is the meaning of the songtitle "Enter Metropolis"?
Cecilie: Well the record is about moving from the countryside, which is actually where we're from into the big city, metropolis. And the title is saying that we're standing on the edge, diving into metropolis but we're not really there yet, we're just standing, like being amazed of the huge city.
Mattias: On our way up the ladder..
Punk76: A typical question: where does your band name come from?
Mattias: Well, me. It is because we've had two different names before. But they were really bad names so we decided at a very early stage, just before everybody came together, it's only been five of us at that time, to change it. Then I researched a lot and I read a book by Frank Herbert, Dune. One of my brothers was in a band called "the Exposé", so I just took the apostrophe and put it over the u and e and we became "Dúné". You can say that dune is a gathering of millions of grains that together build a structure. And this band is the same, we're seven individuals but together we build something. What's this funny saying? Each of us is extraordinary but together we're invincible (laughing).
Punk76: Have you ever been mistaken to be the band "Dune" a trance-band that was kind of famous in the early 90's?
(both laughing)
Mattias: Yeah, in the beginning. We've played our first gig in Germany in Hamburg and the place was called "Studio 1" and it was so small. There were like 12 people and about 6 of them I think came because they thought we were Dune and they were just like "Why are they playing in Studio 1"? They were so confused! And when they arrived and saw this kid standing on stage playing rock music they were just like "Okay this is great but where are Dune?" But since then we've never been mistaken again.
Punk76: What was the last concert you've been to besides your own?
Cecilie: We went to "Muse" in Berlin and it was like a private gig, there were 2500 people. It was really cool, it was at the theatre, called "Generalspalast" and we were sitting at the balcony, yes sitting! And then they played some of their new songs. It was the first time we heard the new songs and we've been really amazed.
Mattias: Last concert I've been to was "Timid Tiger", they supported us on the last tour, they're on the same record company as we are. They played at a really small club, it was a good concert. We played at their re-release party. When their record was re-released, we've been in the first row and rocked out and they saw us and we got up on stage. It was really funny.
Punk76: I've always wondered one thing: there's a line in the song "80 years" that got my attention:
We are the children of a silenced time
We should repeat the second world war
Just to point out that we got it right the first time
what's the meaning behind it? Do you mean that we have to appreciate our lives more?
Mattias: Yeah, a lot of people are wondering why there's a war reference in that song. But it simply means that we shouldn't rest on our laurels. We should keep in mind that we're the golden generation. We've been giving a lot of choices and we should appreciate that we don't have to deal with things like second world war, cold war and so on.
Punk76: Have you ever thought about releasing some acoustic songs?
Cecilie: It's actually a new thought for us. We used to be very narrow minded about our music we had a cretain style and we wouldn't do anything beside it but now we've decided to do some acoustic stuff, there's one song called "Please Bring Me Back". And it's really cool to show the songs in a different way, to show the melody. So I think we slowly consider using more acoustics. But there are still very different meaning about that in the band (smiling).
Mattias: Yeah, but it's a goal for us that our next songs could be played acoustic.
Punk76: Thanks a lot for taking time! And good luck for the show tonight.
Mattias: Well, thank you.
