Punk76: Who had the idea for your band name? I mean, having a broken heart isn't really a blessing?
Tyler: Well, it's a long story but basicly it goes back to when I was going out with this girl for like 7 years and we had a singer when we were starting the band and we went on tour.. when I came back from tour I asked the girl to marry me and I found out that she was with my singer. So I cried, I was puking, peeing my pants, everything.. and so then I started the band and Blessed By A Broken Heart was because. My heart was broken but I was blessed because I finally realized that there was more tolife than just that, because I just focused on my girlfriend and basically realized there's more. So I was Blessed By A Broken Heart. It's kind of a gay sounding but back then it was cool to have a long name because all the hardcore bands had a long name.
Punk76: In 2006 you toured with Enter Shikari trough Europe, how was that, did you like it?
Casey: This is actually my first tour so I didn't get to go on that tour but this guy right here..
Tyler: Yeah, we headlined that tour and it was weird cause right after we were on tour they got really big so it was weird. It was really fun and we really liked their music at first when I heard it on their Myspace site I wasn't too sure but when I saw them live, it was good. I learned all their songs to sing along. Really liking it.
Punk76: Why did Robbie Hart and Simon Foxx leave the band?
Tyler: Uhm.. they started another band called Dollhouse. And it's like a Indie-Rockband.
Punk76: Why did Robbie Hart and Simon Foxx leave the band?
Tyler: Uhm.. they started another band called Dollhouse. And it's like a Indie-Rockband.
Punk76:So they wanted to go into another direction musically?
Tyler: Yeah.
Punk76: Let's talk about your recent album „Pedal to the Metal“. So does that title mean that you're living life on the fast lane now?
Tyler: Well, it's just I like cars and I like Metal.
Casey:It's like put the pedal to the floor, like all the way.
Punk76: Let's talk about your recent album „Pedal to the Metal“. So does that title mean that you're living life on the fast lane now?
Tyler: Well, it's just I like cars and I like Metal.
Casey: It's like put the pedal to the floor, like all the way.
Tyler: Yeah, but "Pedal to the Metal" is just like 80's scene. So we thought it would be good.
Punk76: Do you consider yourself more as a fun band or a very serious band? I mean some of your lyrics aren't very deep, like: "Move your body, move move your body schools out and it's time to party".
Tyler: (smiling) We're very serious!
Casey: I think we're some of both. Some songs are just about havig fun and sometimes we write songs about things that are important to us like what we believe and you can still have fun to it but every song is different.
Punk76: How important is it to have a certain image? Have you had the glam metal / 80's look from the beginning?
Tyler: I mean it's just.. right now I just woke up so I'm wearing this (sweatpants, a hoodie, and a cap) I dress like that all the time. I just like the way how it looks. Growing up I listened to bands like Motley Crue and stuff when you go to see a show it's fun to see good music as well as a fun image. That's what we aimed to do.
Punk76: How important is it to keep in contact with the fans? And how do you do that? Do you have the time to read your myspace messages or something like that?
Tyler: Uhm, we try to talk to all the fans at our myspace site but it's hard because it's so big now. At the beginning we used to answer every E-Mail all the time but it's just hard when you're on tour 'cause you don't always have internet and sometimes you might go on the next day and you missed like a hundred messages and you try to keep up. But we try out best to answer all the questions that people have and talk to kids at the shows I mean as soon as we finish the shows we're heading over to themerch table, to talk to the people and we might look like rockstars but we don't have that rockstar attitude
Punk76: You recently wrote on your myspace page that you have a „tattoo sponsorship“ now, did you have the time to get some tattoos done before starting the tour? If yes, what did you get?
Tyler: I tattoo myself. I do some of Tony's tattoos but because all the guys live in different places I don't get to see them all the time so Tony is getting tattooed by a guy there and when I'm with him he get's tattooed by me but it's just that I don't see him all the time, he lives so far from me. I live in Canada (He points with the hand in the air and then on the floor to demonstrate the distance). He lives all there way down there.
Casey: Tony has got a half sleeve done the day before tour. I think all the shading for half his arm.
Punk76: That must have hurt!
Casey: So it's still pilling if you look at his arm.
Punk76: I just got my first tattoo and it did hurt like hell!
Tyler: (Both laughing) What is it? Let me see! (After a bit of chatting around about the tattoo we went on with the interview)
Punk76: In a magazine I read, that when you were searching for a new singer. You all agreed that it has to be someone, who is a Christian. What was the reason for that?
Tyler: Well I mean we're a christian band. Let's take a straight edge band and one of the guys in the band does heroin. I mean it's not that we don't like people that aren't christian but a lot of our songs were about that so it would be weird if someome is singing about it.
Casey: And doesn't believe..
Tyler: Yeah, who doesn't believe in it. You know? It's like any kind of band, like I said straight edge or you have a political band or you're preaching about the earth or stuff like that and you have one guy in the band who doesn't believe it doesn't make any sense.
Punk76: Do you accept other religions or are you against them?
Casey: Well I mean we're a christian band. Let's take a straight edge band and one of the guys in the band does heroin. I mean it's not that we don't like people that aren't christian but a lot of our songs were about that so it would be weird if someome is singing about it.
Tyler: We had a conversation about this last night. I mean this is what we believe I respect everyone for their choice or religion on stage we don't really preach about it. If you ask us, we'll tell you what we believe but I mean we're not like.. I mean look, I have tattoos I look like everyone else, I'm just a guy that happens to believe in this and I respect everyone and what they believe. Everyone's goal in the band is to love everyone the same and just if someone is interested in what we believe, to share it with them.
Casey:Yeah, like we're the only christian group on this tour and we're all sharing the tourbus and living together and we had a discussion until 5 in the morning last night everyone's talking about it and we're still all cool, nobody's feelings were hurt and we all got to hear eachother and I feel like we got to know eachother better. Everyone's closer because of that.
Punk76: What are your plans for the future?
Tyler: Uhm, like, me and you? (smiling)
Punk76: I mean as a band (smiling)
Tyler: Oh, as a band. I don't know.
Casey: Take over the world! Play everywhere.
Tyler: We want to play with Michael Jackson, that would be my goal.
Punk76: I don't think that's possible.. but he was really good back in the days. I saw him live.
Tyler: (grabbing me by the arm) Are you serious? You saw Michael Jackson?
Punk76: Yes, I did.
Tyler: (all excited) Tell me about it! When?
Punk76: He was still healthy, looking good and stuff and it was a really good show...
Tyler: Yeah, today he looks like a woman without a nose.
Casey: Wait, you have to see his keychain. He carries it with him all the times as inspiration. (Tyler getting up, looking for his keychain. Then realized that it's in his pocket.
Shows me a Keychain with some Michael Jackson pictures on it.)
Tyler: So yeah I love Michael Jackson. And everyone who says they don't, they're lying. Because as soon as they hear the „Baaanaanana daadada..." (imitates the beginning of „Beat It“) they like it!
Punk76: Did you ever consider to do a coversong?
Tyler: Actually did. We demo'ed "Beat It", but then Fall Out Boy did it and they ruined it! Did you heard the solo?
Punk76: Yes, I did.
Casey: The original is Eddie Van Halen, I mean you gotta step up if you play that solo.
Tyler:Yeah when I heard Fall Out Boy, I mean the vocals are great the guy can sing , obviously it's not Michael Jackson but the solo really dissappointed me. We did a cover of „Separate Ways“ by Journey. And we just recorded before we left „Gangster's Paradise“
