Hands - The Sounds Of Earth (as performed by hands)

Oort/Lobster Records . 02/24/2009 . written by Oliver . genre: HC/ Emo/ Screamo . format: CD

HandsChristian hardcore band Hands just formed in October 2007 in their hometown of Fargo, ND. After having an EP released in 2008 the band teamed up with Lobster/ Oort records to record a concept album. I remember when I was listening to Hands for the very first time: I was so disapointed. The great label (Lobster records) which has signed so many great bands in the past like Buck Wild, Staring Back, Whippersnapper, Days Like These and Yellowcard suddenly has signed a Screamo band. What was this for? Just to hang on the trend and just to sell a few albums to earn more money? I was so bitter and I thought, well it seems as if the Screamo-trend will never end. I am not into Screamo any more. There are not so many good Screamo Bands around any more. The majority of these bands just piss me off. But then I received a package with the new Lobster/Oort releases enclosed. I started to listen to Hands and well, what shall I tell you? The record gave me a blast! This is the finest Hardcore/Emo/Screamo stuff that I have heard in a long time. Their music is really dark and their tracks take a very long period of time. Even the intro takes about 3 minutes of time. And their songs often take about 3-5 minutes of time. Hands does not use so many words. Most often their music is flowing just without any words and lyrics - just drawn by dark guitar riffs and outstanding drumming. Whenever I listen to Hands I feel reminded to Shai Hulud, As Friends Rust, Modern Life Is War, The Get Up Kids, Shield (swedish emo/ hardcore band), The Beautiful Mistake and Life In Your Way - just in a more darker version. Hands definitely has a christian backround. Their lyrics focus on God, beliefs, judgement, ignorance and hope. Everytime I listen to Hands I am basking in a very dreamy mood and atmosphere. I really like the strong and softs aspects about Hands. Their music can be extremly hard - especially when their singer is screaming. But there are so many soft and fragile passages on "The Sounds Of Earth" to find, that make it so wonderful to listen to this killer-masterpiece.
