Good Riddance - Remain in memory - the final show
Fat Wreck Chords . release date: 03-14-07 . written by Oliver
One of the most outstanding bands on Fat Wreck has quit it´s job. Good Riddance, who influenced me very much, started out in 1986 in Santa Cruz, California. Russ Ranking, who played in the Santa Cruz Hardcore band Fury66 before decided to found a band and called it “Good Riddance”. Their career on Fat begun in 1993 as they released their 7” “Gidget”. Their unforgetable album “For God And Country” as well as “A Comprehensive Cuide To Modern Rebellion” where just mindblowing. These releases contained so much melody and power. Over the years Good Riddance had tend to become a more hardcore influenced band and not a melodic Rock – or Skatepunk band any more. I watched their career over the years. The critics still loved their classic releases among Operation Phenix or Phenomenon of Craving or Symptoms of a Leveling Spirit. Good Riddance was from the beginning to the past a political band. They had Ups and Downs and some of their releases became a flop. Their last studio release My Republic came out on Fat in 2006 and it blew me away. Finally they found back to the melodic sound pattern and less hardcore. They wrote great melodies and lyrics again. But shortly after Russ Ranking announced, that Good Riddance is not a band any more. “Remain In Memory” got recorded at the final Good Riddance show in Santa Cruz. The band played all their greatest songs again, alike “Flies First Class” from the classic “God And Country” album, or “Weight Of The World” and “Think Of Me” from their killer record “A Comprehensive Guide To Modern Rebellion”. Even newer tracks like “Out Of Mind” from the latest release My Republic got played. Surely the band performed some of their greatest songs on that evenening. On Remain in Memory - the Final you find many classic tracks, like United Cigar , Fast Believer, Fertile Fields, Darkest Days, One For The Braves, All Fall Down, Shadows Of Defeat and tons more. To me “Remain In Memory” is a worthy ending for the band. I like the fact, that you can hear the crowd shouting out loud in the back. This makes the record so well and so authentic to me. Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore recorded that monster live album. Russ voice, the instruments and the audience are well to hear.
