From First To Last - self titled LP
Suretone/Interscope Records . release date: 05-06-08 . written by Oliver
When From First To Last released their debut record "Dear
Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Bodycount" on Epitaph records in 2004 I
got really sick of it. I was not able to stand the record. It was just noise
to me, but it sold about 120.000 copies. It seemed as if the kids really liked
the release. In 2006 the band released their next record, called "Heroine",
that got produced by Ross Robinson (Slipknot, At The Drive-In, Korn),
and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Avenged Sevenfold, System Of A
Down). Sonny Moore, who was the singer back at that time, was doing
a great job on vocals, critiques wrote. But I Was asking myself: Am I the only person,
that was not into the band? Heroine was sounding so boring to me. I disliked
their release again. When FFTL got signed to a major label in 2008, long time
frontman Sonny Moore had to leave the band because of health-related vocal issues.
The doctor told him, that he won´t never be able to speak again, if he
continues singing. Sonny got replaced through bassist Matt Good, who
has such a different voice in comparision to Sonny. Long time friend Matt Manning
filled out Good´s position on bass then. On their self-titled Suretone/Interscope
records debut the band sounds a lot like Saosin, Circa Survive, Chiodos,
We Are The Fury, and Matchbook Romance. Finally the lame Screamo
parts got reduced and so you only find a few songs that contain some Screamo
elements. Travis Richter states, "It's a rock record for people now. It's
because we're all a little older, our feet are more grounded ..". Yes,
they have become older and those wild-screamo-days seem to be over yet. Their
new style is definitely so much better. The new record contains twelve amazing
songs. The most outstanding tracks are called "Two As One"
- a powerful mid-tempo Rock song with a great refrain and slamming drum work.
"Worlds Away" does blow me away. The dark and depressive
track sounds so haunting and strange - but so beautiful as well. On "In
Memorium in advance" the band shows a very soft and silent side. The track
got filled out with soft accoustic guitar and violin. To me the line-up change
has showed a real better effect on the band. To me a typical - and boring -
Screamo band has become a serious Rock band.
