Emery - While broken hearts prevail EP

Emery is a post-hardcore band from Seattle that is around since 2004. The four-piece-band released a stunning debut in 2004 on Toothandnail and kept bounds with the label since then. Today Emery has three full-lenght releases out on Toothandnail. Yet they present their new EP "While broken hearts prevail". Emery is a band that has changed from a brilliant Screamo band to a silent Rock artist. Their 2005 "The Question" was pretty silent. Many fans were pretty dissapointed about this fact. But Emery kept going to reduce the Screamo-elements a lot. "I´m only a man" (2007) was their most silent and beautiful CD. The 2008 release "While broken hearts prevail" contains a mixture of all their styles and directions that the band has made in the past. Toby Morrell has such a beautiful and calming voice. I also like Devin Shelton, who does the agressive throat. I definitely like their new EP, but to me the band has lost creativity and persuasive power. On "While broken hearts prevail" the band has once again become much harder in comparison to their foregoer releases. I read that the band was critized a lot in the past for reducing the power and hardcore anthem. When I put the EP in my player I was really amazed a lot, that Emery has become so much harder again. The record starts with a song called "The smile, The France" which is full of anger and fury. The next track "End of the world" is a beautiful and driving song with a huge Screamo component. I like the fact that the songs on the EP differ a lot. They tend between pretty agressive and sensitive songs. "Ten talents" is a pretty beautiful Rock-ballard with great back-up-vocals, a cool refrain and hard-edged guitars. I also like the dominant breaks with syntheziser in the back. To me the EP has turned out good, but I honestly must admit that Emery has already put out better songs in the past.
