Emery - I´m only a man (deluxe edition)
Toothandnail Records . release date 10/02/07 . review written by Oliver
Emery is a band that has found in 2001 in South California. They´re still
one of the very best artitsts to find on Toothandnail records. You might call
them Emo or Screamo or whatever - to me, they´re just creative and impressive
musicians, that play beautiful and honest music. On January 27, 2004 the band
released their debut record "The Weaks End" on Seattle´s Toothandnail
records - recorded by Ed Rose, who also worked with Underoath, The Get Up Kids and
tons of other great bands. The record gave me a blast, because to me it just
sounded like an awesome mixture of The Hives and Refused. Well, in 2004 just
released their strongest material. I even received their demo records, before
they got signed to Toothandnail. The scene got shocked by all the beauty, when
Emery released "The Question" on Tooth in 2005. They lowered the screaming
parts and put the beautiful singers voice in the focuss. Now the band released
it´s third studio album on Toothandnail. What can you expect, when you
listen to "I´m only a man". First up I need to let you know,
that Emery is still a very good band, but you can´t compare their debut
record and their latest record any more. The difference between those releases
is just impressive. On "I´m only a man" the fragile singers
voice collide with super energic drum work and damn strong guitar and bass lines.
The new record starts with the opener "Rock-N-Rule". This tunes contains
so much power and beautiness at once. The track is fallowed by "The Party
Song" a super massive Hit - with electronic elements - that got recorded
in a mid-tempo manner. Devin Shelton and Toby Morell have such bittersweet voices
and both singers complement one another. "The Party Song" directly
grabs you by the heart and you have no other option to shout out loud and sing-a-long
with your heroes on every single verse. The next song is in my opinion the most
outstanding track on the record, called "World Away". The fresh and
beautiful refrains makes my brain freak out completely. The dulcent voices and
the soft drum work plus those gleamy guitars in the back, gonna round off this
song. I like the fact, that Emery still offers some passages, when one of the
singers is shouting out loud. In "World Away" you can find a few harder
passages. The more I listen to the new record, the more I get impressed. The
fantastic debut record from 04´s is not competitive any more, but the
newer stuff just reveals true feelings and beautiness. Sometimes Emery becomes
very histrionic and serious - especially on their song "After the Devil
beats his wife" - which is a complex tune, with complicated guitar solo,
some effects, heavy guitar work plus aditional screaming and piano in the back.
The constant developement of the band makes me speechless. I really do wonder,
why they are not to find on a major label. Anyway. The "Deluxe Version"
contains eleven studio tracks plus five live sets, performed with an accoustic
guitar. In addition to the CD you find a DVD with 21 (!) songs on. I think this
is really enough Emery music for your money, right? Emery is really highly recommended
on P76. To me the band is not only on the cutting-edge of Rock music, no, to
me they are the new Rock music!
