Emery came back to Europe and proved that with them you're in a Win-Win-Siuation
In 2009 Emery came to Germany for the very first time. They played some gigs at small venues as well as the Give It A Name Festival in cologne and munich. In march 2010, almost exactly one year from then, they came back to Europe to play some shows and of course some of them were in Germany.
Doors opened at the Logo in Hamburg at 8pm and at 8.30pm the venue was pretty crowded. About 200 people were awaiting the very talented band from South Carolina. Later, it were about 350 people.
Deaf Havana, a very energetic young band from the UK started their set at 8.45pm and soon got the attention of the crowd. Sadly singer/shouter Ryan wasn't able to tour with his bandmates "due to complications at home", as stated on the band's Myspace page. A good friend named Max, who's in the band "Brides" filled in Ryan's part and did pretty well. They played songs of their recent record "Meet Me Halfway At Least", a record with lots of catchy songs which are even better live than on the record. To name some of them, the setlist included their new single "Nicotine And Alcohol Saved My Life" as well as "Friends Like These". James Veck-Gilodi, guitarist and vocalist of the band has an amazing voice and every note was on point. While Emo-Punk nowadays becomes boring and all the same more and more, Deaf Havana is a band that will show you that this genre can be exciting and well done.
After about 30 minutes Moneen from Canada entered the stage. Those four guys really rocked. The audience seemed to enjoy their punk-rock sound from the first minute. Between their songs they talked to the fans a lot, told them that they didn't have a place to stay that night, asked if someone would take them home with him/her and laughed as a guy in the front screamed "yeeeees!" even before singer Kenny was able to finish the sentence. They played songs of their recent record "The World I Want To Leave Behind" as well as some older songs, for example "Start Angry...End Mad". As they finished their 30-minute-set a short soundcheck followed and then it was time for the heroes of the evening.
EMERY entered the stage, said hello and started off with their song "Butchers Mouth". Usually a good opener but it seemed as if the guys weren't really enjoying what they were doing. But as soon as the first sound of the second song, "Party Song" started, EMERY went crazy. They jumped around, vocalists Devin and Toby sung from the top of their lungs and you could see smiles everywhere you were looking. One of the facts that makes EMERY an outstanding band is that Devin's and Toby's voices are similar but not the same, they complete one another. Josh Head, who's in charge of the keyboard as well as the shoutings was as entertaining as ever. He's just a crazy, charming person and does the shoutings very, very well. EMERY played a great mix of their records, to name some "The Ponytail Parade" and "Walls" of their Record "The Weak's End", "Listening To Freddy Mercury" of their record "The Question", "The Smile, The Face" of their recent record "In Shallow Seas We Sail" and many more. Between the songs Toby took the chance to talk to the audience, explained that he usually doesn't like to be outside the USA but that times like these make it easier for him because he had the feeling that everyone in the venue was a friend, even though he doesn't really know the people. He seemed thankful and earnest.
As encore they played "Fractions" and "Studying Politics" and said goodbye. But EMERY (as well as Deaf Havana and Moneen) didn't leave right after the show. They all mingled around the crowd, took pictures, wrote autographs, and simply talked to the people. And by talking I don't mean a "Hey, thanks for coming" and then leaving but a real talk. They took time and seemed to appreciate every fan.
In conclusion it was a great concert that left nothing to be desired (well, maybe "World Away"...) and EMERY proved once again that they are extremely good at what they're doing, as well as very nice persons who are down to earth.
