Dashboard Confessional - Dusk And Summer

Vagrant/ Universal Records . 07/27/2006 . written by Oliver . genre: Emo/ Rock/ Accoustic

Dashboard ConfessionalChris Carrabba and his mates in Dashboard Confessional present their highly anticipated CD, which is called Dusk And Summer. The band had massive succsess in 2003, when they released "A mark, a mission, a brand a scar". Unfortunately I never really heard that record, so I´m not sure, in which direction the band has developed their style. I knew - and loved - their forerunner record "The places you come to fear the most", which became the new definition of EMO (emotional music) in the beginning of 2000. Now I am sitting here and listen to the new DC record. I once read about Chris, that he was afraid to play with a band on his very first releases. He prefered to play accoustic stuff in the beginning. Well, it seems that Chris has become more familiar with a band, cuz I can only figure out one single accoustic song. Chris and the band have become more mature and even a little bit harder. Check out the 2nd song, which is called "Reason to believe". Check out those guitars and the slamming drum work - doesn´t that song remind you you to Quicksand? It does to me and I can really figure out the power and the potential that song has. I was pretty unsatisfied, as I was listening the very first time to the new material. I was so much in love with that old, emotional accoustic stuff. I had to listen a couple of times to D&S and the more I listend to the record, the more I started to love it - but, the record is not a masterpiece. I have to say it that clearly. The record contains really great tunes, like "So long, so long" (#6), "Reason To Believe (#2), The Secret´s in the telling (#3), Currents (#7) and a couple more, but I can also figure out some tunes, that I totally dislike. I my opion the opener, which is called "Don´t wait" really sucks. I also dislike "Slow decay" very much, which sounds very good so far, but the chorus just makes me mad - it sounds not really good. I dislike the whole song structure and I am also missing that typical DC style here too. Anyway, luckily there are many good songs on the CD, that I already mentioned. Those "good" songs remind me way more to the old DC days, just that you find a complete band in the back now. I really love those emotional songs, which include violins, soft back-up-vocals.
