What makes Converge this popular? Is it the fast chaotic and aggressive music that attracts people? This is a band which defines a whole genre. I’ve never heard such a thrilling sound before. Some people would call their sound is pure trash, but if you listen carefully you understand the point of this music. After three years of touring, Converge made a new studio album. Since Jane Doe, Converge increased their circle of fans through touring and becoming bigger in media. So everybody was waiting for their new album which has to stand up to Jane Doe. But “You Fail Me” is very different from Jane Doe. It shows the band's development in the course of time becoming more complex and having a wider spectrum of music. The album contains more slower songs like “You Fail Me” and “In Her Shadow,” sometimes even acoustic but without losing their mystery and darkness. Introducing the album, the song “First Light” features a slow guitar intro without vocals. Continuing with the song ”Last Light” the speed increases but is still slow in relation to other songs. But then track 3 shows good old Converge style. Energetic parts with convincing guitars and drums. Song 4 and 5 do the same with many tempo changes and strange guitar solos. Sometimes you get the impression that every instrument does its own thing but then with a big “bang” they repeat the same pattern which is very impressive. The middle of the album is “You Fail Me” which is slow but very dark, followed by the emotional “In Her Shadows”. However they get back to brutality with “Eagles Become Vultures”. I think there are some people who won't appreciate this album because it is not that easy to get into it as Jane Doe. You need to hear it several times. But for everyone who likes bands like Dillinger Escape Plan this album is the right decision.
