Cinematic Sunrise - A coloring storybook and long playing record
Equal Vision Records . 10/14/2008 . written by Oliver . genre: Emo . format: EP
Craig Owens (vocals) and Bryan Beeler (piano) from Chiodos have
found a side-project called Cinematic Sunrise in spring 2005.
Dave Shapiro (ex- Count The Stars, Victory rec.),
Nick Martin (Ex-Underminded, Kung Fu rec.) and
Markcu Vankirk round out the team today. Dave plays drums, Marcus plays bass and
Nick plays guitar. Funny thing first: The booklet is coloured in black and white.
Fans can color the whole booklet, that shows all those sweet animals and a landscape
with rainbows and trees. Craig Owens sings and Bryan Beeler plays piano in their
major project Chiodos - a bandproject, that has become pretty sucssessful
in the past. The New York Times even mention them in their column and called Craig
"The New Rock Star". Honestly Chiodos [review: here]
is a good Screamo project, but I am not so much into Screamo any more and therefore
I am really happy to hear Craig - who has an extraordinary voice by the way -
singing in Cinematic Sunrise with a clean voice. His sideproject is a pure fun project,
he explains on the labels website Equal Vision records. And well, he is right.
Good mood and a positive spirit dominate the record. The eight tracks are so beautiful
and heart-melting. Craig's beautiful voice fits so well into the "happy-concept"
of the record. This man seem to be a work-a-holic, because he sings in a couple
of projects. He also helped out on vocals on the new The Sound Of Animals Fighting
CD [review: here].
Unfortunately I never heard the 2005 full lenght release but I can assure you
the EP here is a wonderful masterpiece consisting of silent and thoughtfull melodies.
The most outstanding tracks are "Pulling a piano from the pond", which
has such a dominant beat and such a great refrain. When Craig Owens sings the
refrain, I often feel reminded to Davey Havock from AFI. It is not the intensity
in the voice but the same ability to sing in different octaves, that makes me
think of the comparison between Davey and Craig. "Goodbye Friendship, hello
heartache" is the most beautiful ballard, that I have heard in years. Craig's
beautiful voice touched my heart so deep while I was listening. The refrain is
also so beautiful - this track can almost create the illusion the world is a peaceful
and wonderful place to live in. My favourite track is called "Crossing fingers
for the summer". This danceable track has such a beautiful refrain. To me
this track can be perfectly taken for a movie soundtrack. I can only advice you
to buy this record, if you like bitter sweet and emotional Rock tracks. These
tracks are so friendly and nice that even the national Radio could play those.
If you like Sensefield, Mercy Mercedes, Pompeii, Circa Survive and Elliot's classic release "False
Cathedrals" (Revelation Records, 2000) then you shouldn't hesitate to buy this
awesome EP.
