Bad Religion - The empire strikes first

Epitaph Records . release date: 07-07-04 . written by Oliver

Bad ReligionThe Empire Strikes First is the latest release from Bad Religion and I directly need to tell you that I am a sceptic, because I am not into this album. The album get´s slowly better from the fifth song on. I don´t know what is so wrong about the newer BR releases, but I am missing the typical Bad Religion song-concept and the great melodies, back up vocals and harmonies. I love all the old releases, like Suffer, Against The Grain and all the other great records. The Empire Strikes First gets better from song number five on. “Los Angeles is Burning” is such an amazing punkrock hymn. This song reminds me to those classic Bad Religion releases, like “Generator” or “Against the Grain”. The record is dominated by mid-tempo and slow songs. There are not to many fast songs included on the record. Greg Graffin is the only savant (He is a professor at the University of New York) that I know, who is singing in a punkrock band. Graffin's smart lyrics gonna criticize society as well as the politics. At least I would like to mention, that “The Empire Strikes First” has turned out a little harder than those other BR releases. The sing-a-long factor is definitily given here but the record is not as good as all the classic stuff.
