Armor For Sleep - Smile for them

Equal Vision Records . 4/18/2005 . written by Oliver

Armor For SleepThis melancholy and contemplative record is a miracle for me, because the majority of the songs is talking about death. Even the booklet shows a corpse, flying through the suburbs, dressed in a suit. Call their record a comprehensive guide to your afterlife. What has happened to Armor? I cam remind a more happier atmosphere on the last record. However, “What to Do When You are Dead” contains eleven mid-tempo Rock songs, consisting of solid drum work, bouncing basslines surrounded by Ben Jorgensen´s wonderful voice. His voice tends between bitter sweet and harder, mature aspects. I am really confused by songs like “Car Underwater”, which describes a tragic end of a love story, as a car drove into the water and sunk there. Especially those lines like: “Walked past my grave in the dark tonight” will make it clear, this is not a happy record! But in the end, this mid tempo rock-record has turned out very good. I also found several similarities to bands like “The Beautiful Mistake” or “Saves the Day”, just without any screaming elements in it. Ben Jorgensen's voice is young but very powerful. I also like the fact that the band dares to add different sound effects, like drum computers and violins. They also know how to create silent and gentle passages, which can explode in the next second. Yeah, this record is really an intersting and mature record, with many surprising passages in it to find.
