Chicago´s Alkaline Trio has released “Agony And Irony” on Epic records. The group consisting of Matt Skiba/vocals-guitar, Dan Adriano/bass-voc. and Derek Grant/drums has started out on Asian Man records about ten years ago. They also were a long time member of the Vagrant Records rooster. But the time has come to spread their music on a much larger audience. Their music got caracterized as dark and haunting but also sweet and beautiful. The band was well known for their dark lyrics and catchy chorusses, which made them recognizeable in the scene and in the big media stations as well. Skiba, who also has a great side-project, called Heavens, has written some of his very best songs to perform on the latest album “Agony And Irony”. The record contains eleven ground-breaking Pop tunes, that often got filled out with synthesizers. Alkaline has a dark and romantic image, that they maintain on their newest record. The record has turned out to be a flawless Rock record without any deficits on. I really like the raw guitars and the super huge drum- and basslines. To end up the review, I need to say, that AT has decreased the punk attitude. Instead the songs show a lot of affection on Billy Idol, The Cure and U2. “Lost And Rendered” as well as “Calling All Skeletons” may be the only tunes, that may describe as Punk. The rest of the songs are more silent, but not less good. The album is really great and I like the dark atmosphere about it. “Ruin It” is also affected by some Psycho-Billy elements – just compare the guitar and agree with me. “Agony And Irony” might belong to the very best releases, the band has ever recorded.
