Alesana - Where myth fades to legend

Fearless/ Defiance Records . release date: 06-03-08 . written by Oliver

AlesanaNorth Carolina´s sextett Alesana is back with their sophomore album, “Where myth fades to legend”. In 2007 Fearless records re-released Alesana´s first album “On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax “, which originally came out on Tragic Hero Records in 2005. The record gained huge attention in the US. In 2008 Fearless records teamed up with Germanys Defiance Records to put out Alesana´s somophore release on 6/03/08 in the US and Europe at the same time. The new record has abviously become much more harder in comparison to the foregoer release. And so I can find out about a lot of different influences: The guitars, for example, remind me a lot to Avenged Sevenfold´s and Aiden´s well known hooks and riffs. I also like the fact, that Alesana has two singers: Shawn Mike does the clean vocals (these remind me a lot to Claudio Sanchez from Coheed And Cambria); Dennis Lee is doing the bawl vocals and the screams. Adam Ferguson (guitar) does the back-up-vocals and screams. I can assure you, that you become infected by Alesana, if you´re into Underoath, A Thorn For Every Heart, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Dead Poetic, Avenged Sevenfold and even the Fall Of Troy. The group is really hard to describe, because their music includes so many different styles and influences. Shawn Mike´s voice sounds crystal clear and fragile, while Dennis Lee burst the the whole set with his brutal and dominant voice. Alesana have recorded 13 pretty hard Rock tracks. Their label Fearless Records calls their music "Sweetcore". Indeed this might describe pretty well what you can expect from Alesana on their somophore release: Cute guys that recorded bitter-sweet Rock tracks with whiny lyrics on. Me personally am not into the Screamo stuff any more. I even have to admit, that I really love the normal singers voice more. I even wish, that they would leave away all the screaming and shouting parts. There is only one song without any bigger scream-and-shout elements on, called "Seduction", which is track #3. This tune sounds so much like Coheed And Cambria´s smash hit "A Favor House Atlantic" which was to find on their great album "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3". In general you should really buy a copy if you´re into Aiden, Avenged Sevenfold, Fear Before The March Of Flames and Coheed. I honestly need to admit, that Alesana is not my favourite band. Their music is really pretty melodic but there is way to much shouting and screaming packed on the record.
